Moss Crafting 101: Tips & Tricks
Sourcing Your Moss
- Local Nurseries: Many local nurseries carry preserved moss in a variety of colors and textures. Visiting a nursery allows you to see the moss in person and choose the perfect type for your project (while supporting your local small businesses).
- Online Retailers: Online retailers offer a wide selection of preserved moss, often at competitive prices. Be sure to read reviews. I’ll link the moss I have used below.
- Consider Foraging (with caution): If you’re adventurous, you might consider foraging for moss in your local area. However, it’s crucial to be mindful of local regulations and only collect small amounts from healthy populations. I have lots of moss around my trees on the property and have dug up live moss to use.
Preserving and Caring for Your Moss Creations
- Preserved Moss: Preserved moss typically requires minimal care. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight or excessive moisture, as this can cause discoloration or mold. Dusting occasionally with a soft brush is usually sufficient.
- Live Moss (if using): If you’re working with live moss, ensure it receives adequate moisture and indirect light. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
Displaying Your Moss Crafts
- Wall Art: Hang moss wall art on any wall in your home, from living rooms and bedrooms to entryways and hallways.
- Mantlepieces: Display moss wreaths, terrariums, or small moss arrangements on your mantelpiece.
- Shelves and Bookshelves: Add a touch of greenery to your shelves by placing a bowl of moss balls or small terrariums.
- Tabletops: Create eye-catching centerpieces using moss-covered bowls, vases, or decorative objects.
- Outdoor Decor: Use weather-resistant moss (if available) to create outdoor decorations such as hanging planters or garden accents.
