How To Paint A Terra Cotta Pot

In: Decorating Tips & Tricks, DIY Decorating Projects

Who else loves the look of handmade pottery bowls??? It’s on the list of things I would love to learn!!

For now, I’ll fake it and make this super inexpensive alternative to real pottery…

Painting A Terra Cotta Planter To Look Like Pottery

This was a quick DIY project and it turned out so pretty! It started out with a $3 terra cotta planter bowl I grabbed from a local discount store.

For this project, I used 3 paint colors: cream, gray, and navy. Acrylic or chalk paint would work.

I brushed the cream paint around the bottom third of the bowl; just in a simple swirling with the paint brush.

For the middle section I used the gray paint.

Then for the rest I did navy paint.

I told you this was a quick and easy project!!!

Now here’s the trick to make it look like it was artisan crafted…. blending!!

While all the paint was still wet I blended the areas where the colors met.

To blend the colors I lightly dipped my paintbrush into both of the colors…so half the paintbrush was cream paint and half was gray.

Then for the next set I cleaned the brush and did half gray and half navy.

This softened the edges.

I added a little navy to the bottom of the bowl for a little extra color pop.

Once the inside was dry I flipped the bowl over and followed the same paint pattern on the outside of the planter bowl.

Now the secret sauce of making this look like glazed pottery is spraying the planter bowl with Krylon Crystal Clear glaze (wait until the paint is completely dried before doing the glaze).

This stuff rocks! I used it for my sea glass bird bath too.

Once the glaze was dry, I put the bowl in my bathroom with the faux nautical floats I made for my last HometalkTV project.

So for just a few dollars, I made a one-of-a-kind piece for my home!

It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to make your home stylish & beautiful!!
