Supplies
- 3 Small Grapevine Hearts (set from Amazon)
- Assorted Moss (reindeer moss &preserved moss)
- Dried Baby’s Breath
- Frayed Velvet Ribbon (Hobby Lobby)
- Glue Gun
To cover the grapevine hearts in moss I used 2 different types of moss: preserved sheet moss and green reindeer moss. Reindeer moss is soft spongy moss and sheet moss is the more traditional moss.
Using 2 different types of moss gives this project more texture and color variation that really makes these hearts look fantastic.
Step 1: Cover Hearts with Moss
For this project, I am using 3 grapevine hearts that are about 6 inches each. I ordered my heart wreaths from Amazon because I couldn’t find them locally.
You will need a hot glue gun for this project…so get it heated up! I always recommend using the Gorilla brand glue sticks (Mini and Full). In my opinion, they are so worth the extra cost because I find the bond to be stronger and more durable than the store-brand glue sticks.
Starting at the bow of the heart I squeezed a bead of hot glue onto the grapevine wreath and then attached a small piece of moss to it (be careful because the glue is hot, wear a finger protector so you don’t burn yourself).
As I was going around the wreath I alternated between the 2 types of mosses I was using: preserved moss and reindeer moss.
To get a more delicate look, I ripped the pieces of moss before I glued them onto the wreath.
The entire process goes pretty quickly! So you can get all 3 moss wreaths done in under 20 minutes.
Step 2: Add Baby’s Breath
After the moss was done, I wanted to add a floral touch to the heart wreaths. Any small delicate flower would work…I was going to add dried hydrangeas too but decided that I loved the simple look of the moss and baby’s breath better. Plus, the dried baby’s breath is so much easier for you to find.
The dried baby’s breath I am using is from Amazon, It was more expensive than finding a bouquet at the market (Trader Joe’s always has it for around $4) but I really love the more creamy ivory color of it as opposed to the bright white that I see in the stores.
It was around $17 but I have used it on 3 projects since last Summer.
Since the wreaths I am using are around 6 inches in size even using one cluster of the flowers looked too much so I pulled off small pieces of baby’s breath.
It was easy to tuck the stems into the grapevine wreath without glue too, so that saved some time. Totally use a small drop of glue on your flowers if it’s a hassle.
Step 3: Add Ribbon for Hanging
Now add the ribbon to the hearts so they can be hung.
Any color or style of ribbon will work, just pick a color that you love and works in your home!
For my moss hearts, I am using a beautiful frayed green velvet ribbon that I found at Hobby Lobby for $3.99 a roll. At Christmas, I used this green velvet and also gold velvet everywhere!!
I wanted the heart to hang in a straight row, so I cut 2 pieces of ribbon to about 11 inches each.
Next, I flipped the 3 hearts over and lined them up on my workbench so the backsides were facing up.
Then I threaded a ribbon around 2 of the hearts and hot glued the 2 ends in the back so the edges would be hidden when they were hanging.
Repeat to attach the 2nd and 3rd hearts together.
For the top heart, I took a long piece of ribbon and tied a bow. Don’t you love how the velvet drapes down!!
Finished Hanging Hearts
Now that the moss grapevine heart door hanger is done it’s time to find a place for it to go.
You could hang this on your door, on a long mirror, or even on your wall.
It will definitely work right through the Spring months too! The green of the moss will compliment Easter decorations or pretty Spring flowers.
