Turn a forgotten grapevine wreath into a whimsical fairy door—with just dried flowers, moss, and a sprinkle of enchantment!
Enchanted Fairy Wreath: A Whimsical DIY for Your Door
There’s something magical about a wreath that feels like it was plucked straight from a fairy tale. When I stumbled upon an old, unraveling grapevine wreath in my stash, I knew it was destined for a second life—as a whimsical fairy door wreath! With dried flowers, colorful moss, and a few enchanting touches, this project blends rustic charm with a sprinkle of fantasy. Best of all? It’s easy, budget-friendly, and perfect for adding year-round fairy magic to your front door.

Here’s What I Used To Make This Wreath

Materials for this Project
- Grapevine wreath base (or foraged branches bent into a half-moon)
- Floral wire (to secure the structure)
- Dried flowers: Statice, sea lavender, bunny tails, gomphrena (or any garden leftovers!)
- Moss Variety (for fairy-worthy texture)
- Spanish moss (check Dollar Tree!)
- Whimsical accents: Mini mushrooms, butterflies, fairy figurine
- Hot glue gun + glue sticks
- Scissors/garden clippers
A Note on Flowers & Personalization
The star players here? Trader Joe’s statice and sea lavender—I let them air-dry naturally, but you could absolutely arrange them fresh on the wreath (they’ll dry in place with zero fuss).

No TJ’s nearby? No problem! This project thrives on creativity:
- Swap in dried hydrangeas, strawflowers, or even herbs like lavender
- Try a moody palette with deep blue statice and rust-colored celosia
- Go wild with textures – wheat stalks, seed pods, or preserved ferns work beautifully
Step-by-Step Tutorial
This is an easy wreath to put together. To cut the grapevine wreath I would advise you to use a pair of garden clippers(they handle thick vines easily).
Also, have your glue gun ready to go with extra glue sticks on hand.
1. Reshape Your Wreath Base

- Deconstruct an old grapevine wreath into individual rings.
- Cut rings in half to create crescent-moon pieces.

- Stack and secure with floral wire, bending into a half-moon shape.
- Pro Tip: Overlap pieces for a fuller look—fairies love cozy nooks!
2. Attach Dried Flowers

- Prep flowers: Trim stems and bundle small groups with floral wire.
- Layer textures: Start at the top of the crescent shape (will add moss to ends of grapevine crescent in step 3) and alternate your flowers and textures.
- Keep flower bundles tight together for a full look.(we will fill in gaps with moss in the next step)
- Secure: Hot glue bundles to the wreath, tucking stems into the vines.

Design Tip: Cluster colors together (purples/pinks) for a “fairy garden” effect.

I added small clusters (3) of gomphrena after the other flowers were attached to the wreath; when I looked at the wreath I thought it needed a pop of a brighter color.
3. Moss It Up!

After attaching all my dried flowers, I brought in colorful moss for that extra fairy-forest texture:
- Mixed Moss (I used lime green and soft purple) to fill gaps with pops of color
- Spanish moss (draped along the lower edges) for that magical, dripping-from-the-trees effect

Pro Tip: Tear the moss into uneven clumps and glue sparingly—this keeps it looking organic, not stuffed! The Spanish moss naturally cascades like tiny vines, perfect for hiding any sparse spots while adding movement.
4. The Magic Finale: Adding Whimsical Accents

Now for the fun part—bringing the wreath to life with fairy touches! Here’s how I styled mine (use hot glue to attach everything):

- Lilac mushrooms (3 total) nestled into the flower clusters at the center—like they’re sprouting naturally from the blooms.
- Feather butterflies flanking each side, as if they just landed for a sip of nectar.
- A fairy figurine at the crescent’s base, peeking out from the Spanish moss like she’s tending her floral kingdom.

To finish the wreath off I sprayed it with a matte topcoat to help preserve the colors of the dried flowers and protect the wreath from the elements.
Pro tip: I would strongly suggest that you protect your wreath from inclement weather and not hang in direct sunlight.
The Big Reveal: A Wreath Fit for Fairy Royalty

I’ll be honest—I wasn’t sure this hodgepodge of old grapevine, assorted dried flowers, and craft store finds would come together. But when it was done I couldn’t believe how pretty it was! A perfect combination of natural beauty and storybook charm. The lilac mushrooms blend perfectly with the sea lavender, the butterflies look like they could flutter away, and the little fairy ties it all together.

Final Thoughts: Whimsy Where You Least Expect It

- Old supplies (like that sad grapevine wreath) still have magic to give
- Dried flowers from last summer’s garden or grocery store are prettier than their artificial counterparts.
- A little whimsy goes a long way, no need to overdo it with tons of butterflies, mushrooms etc!
Now it’s your turn—grab that old wreath in your stash, raid the garden shed, and see what happens. Hopefully you’ll fall in love with your front door all over again!
