Spring is a time of renewal, and there’s no better way to welcome the season into your home than with fresh flowers! Today, I’m sharing a super easy DIY project that will bring a touch of spring to any space.
This tulip basket tutorial uses simple materials – a handled chicken wire basket, potted tulips, and pussy willow branches – to create a charming and vibrant centerpiece or porch decoration.
Make A Tulip Basket
We made it through another winter!! Spring is starting to sneak it with longer days and the bulbs have started to break ground around here.
One thing that helps me get over that final hump of winter and get excited for Spring is adding some Spring flowers around the house.
Today I am going to teach you how to make a quick & easy tulip basket that will surely brighten your day!
No special skills are needed for this DIY Spring project and you will need very few materials.

Materials for Tulip Basket
- Potted Tulips or other Spring bulbs
- Handled Wire Basket (similar)
- Gallon Plastic Storage Bag
- Moss
- Angel Vine Garland
- Birch Twigs
- Pussy Willow Branches
- Wood Tag (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
This tulip basket will only take you a few minutes to put together. I am using a wire basket that I found at the thrift store.
Check out your local secondhand shops for similar baskets.
Gather Supplies
Find a basket and a pot of tulips or other Spring flowering bulbs to use for this basket arrangement. Trader Joe’s is where I find the best selection and price of potted bulbs at this time of the year.
Transfer Tulips
Tip the tulips out of the nursery pot and pop them into a gallon-sized Ziploc bag with the soil. It’s easier to disguise a plastic bag in this chicken wire basket than the nursery pot.
Turn down the sides of the plastic bag to just above the soil level.
Fill In Basket w Natural Materials
At the bottom of the basket, I wrapped a piece of angel vine garland around the tulips. Grapevine garland would work too.
I also went outside and clipped a few fresh birch twigs. Live branches, not the ones you find on the ground, will need to be used. Fresh branches are pliable and will bend without breaking.
Using the round sides of the wire basket as a guide, I started wrapping the birch branches around the inside of the basket.
Overlapping the twigs as I worked my way around the basket.
Add Moss
Once the birch twigs were finished I added fresh moss inside the basket covering up the dirt and plastic bag. Preserved moss that you find at the craft store works too!
Finishing Touches
To add another touch of Spring to this tulip basket I added a few branches of pussy willows, using the soil to keep them in place
To finish off this easy project, I hand-stamped a wood slice with the world TULIP on it and used jute twined to secure it to the front of the basket.
Finished Tulip Basket
The nice thing about working with potted Spring bulbs is that after the blooms fade away I plant the bulbs in my garden for tulips next Spring.
This pretty little flower basket would look great on your dining table, hall table, or even out on your front porch if it’s warm enough where you live.
The tulips won’t last forever but once they are done flowering you can remove the bulbs and replace them with a pretty pot of pansies to get you through the rest of the Spring.
