Greet Spring with a Living Daffodil Door Basket (It’s Easier Than You Think!)
Today I have a quick & easy project that will only take a few minutes to put together. Plus it’s budget-friendly! I will show you how I transformed a pretty ugly thrift store find into a natural floral basket for Spring.
Materials For This Project:
Finding The Wall Basket
For this project, I am using a hanging wall basket. This one was on a shelf with wreaths at my local thrift store.
Even though the flowers were pretty ugly I noticed the shape and condition of the basket that it was in and was sold…and it was only a few dollars. If I could have left the flowers behind I would have but the floral foam was secured pretty well to the bottom of the basket.
So check out your local secondhand shops first to see if you can find a bargain wall basket before you buy something new.
Here are a few baskets that I found online that would work:

Making The Daffodil Basket
This is going to be an easy project to try even if you don’t think you are crafty. Today I am using daffodils but this will work with any pot of Spring bulbs or flowers. Pansies would look adorable too!
Trader Joe’s is a great spot to pick up pots of Spring bulbs. While I was there I grabbed daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths to use for a few different projects. Your local nursery and grocery store usually stock pots of bulbs in the early Spring too.
Remove The Daffodils
To remove the daffodil bulbs from the nursery pot, gently put one hand around the greens of the daffodils while squeezing the pot with your other hand to loosen the soil along with the bulbs.
Make sure your daffodils are watered beforehand so the soil clumps together.
Line Basket With Plastic Bag
A gallon-size plastic Ziploc bag works perfectly as a liner inside of the basket. This will contain all of the soil and prevent making a mess when you hang it on your door.
Add Daffodils
This is so easy! Pick up your daffodils (soil and all) and pop it right inside the plastic baggie. Depending on how large your basket is will determine how many bulbs you will need to fill it.
Add Twigs or Pussy Willows
One easy tip I want you to try is adding twigs to your floral arrangements. Adding a wood element among your flowers gives it the added something, you will notice that professional arrangements often have branches woven in with the flowers.
For a Spring feel I gathered a few small birch twigs from my backyard. Pussy willows is another perfect choice for Spring.
All you have to do is push the end of the twigs into the soil to keep them in place.
Fill With Spanish Moss
Now to hide the plastic bag and fill in the empty space use clumps of Spanish moss. The Dollar Tree is my go-to spot for Spanish moss and you can’t beat the price and the quality is also nice (same as the craft stores at a fraction of the cost).
Final Touches
For an extra touch, I stamped a simple SPRING on a cardboard gift tag and secured it to the basket using jute twine.
Here’s what I used:
I used jute twine to secure the tag to the basket (just ran the jute through the spaces in the rattan).
A frayed velvet ribbon finished of this simple Spring basket look. (Hobby Lobby has the best velvet ribbon, especially when it’s on sale it’s around $2.50 roll, it’s located in the sewing dept.)
Daffodil Spring Door Basket: Finished Look
So in about 10 minutes, I transformed a thrift store find into a pretty way to welcome Spring. A fun part of using real bulbs to make Spring flower arrangements and projects is that once the flowers fade away you can plant the bulbs in your garden and have flowers next year. I have a patch in my garden where I’ve planted bulbs over the years.
