Looking for an easy and affordable project that everyone can do? See how you can upcycle and decorate tin cans and turn them into vases.
Are you asking yourself..”Did Jen really say tin can vase??” Yes, yes I did and it came out really pretty!
Easy DIY Tin Can Vases: A Step-by-Step Tutorial
I’m going to show you how to use one of those large restaurant-sized tin cans to make a vase but this technique will work on any sized can. A smaller can would look so sweet with a few stems of wildflowers.
I usually save these giant tin cans when I make a pot of sauce. They are so versatile…in the Winter I use them to toss out sand onto my walkway so I don’t slip on the ice!!
Also, These are the best-canned tomatoes for making sauce…they are a local New England brand.

Materials:
- Large Empty Tin Can
- Spray Paint ( I’m using copper)
- Black & Dark Copper Craft Paint
- Ribbon (optional)
Paint the Tin Can
After removing the label, I gave the can a coat of copper spray paint ( Colorshot Lucky Penney ).
Add Paint Detailing
Once the paint was dry, I added a little detail to make the tin can vase look a bit aged. I dry brushed on a darker copper metallic acrylic paint and a black using a small chip brush.
To dry brush this can I dipped my chip brush into the paint lightly, tapped most of it off on a paper towel, then dabbed my brush onto the tin can.
Here’s a close-up of the tin can to see the detail of the paint.
Finish With A Ribbon
Once the paint was dry, I added a pretty ribbon around the vase and popped in a tall plastic container of water before adding my flowers.
I cut hydrangeas, celosia, crabapple branches, and greenery from my yard to fill my new vase and made it the centerpiece of my dining table as part of my early Fall decorating look.

I have another flower container idea using a tin can! See a different painting technique to make this rustic-looking can with a sunflower arrangement.
So instead of throwing that can in the recycle bin try making a cute container for your flowers!

Love this centerpiece and the simplicity of your tin can vase. I’d like to share your post in my weekly wrap-up Saturday.
Thanks so much Kim!! I’d love that!!
Love, love, love the simplicity of this. Adding to my list. And wondering if I can find those tomatoes? You’re amazing!
Thanks friend!! I love everything by Pastene…I couldn’t find them a couple of months ago and bought another brand to make a pot of sauce and my son noticed his first bite!!
