How to Make A Patriotic Summer Door Basket

In: DECORATING, DIY Decorating Projects, Patriotic, Summer Decorating and Projects, Wreaths

Here’s an easy alternative to a wreath for your front door this Summer! This patriotic Summer door basket looks great and takes under 5 minutes to make!

Summer Hanging Door Basket

What You Will Need For This Project:

  • Hanging Basket- (Antique Farm House similar)
  • Red Poppy Bunch (2) – Michaels
  • White Queen Ann’s Lace (2) – Michael’s
  • Ferns- Michael’s
  • Patriotic Ribbon- Michael’s

We have 2 doors in the front of the house that you see from the road. One on the front porch and one leading into the garage. I like mixing it up and instead of having wreaths hanging at both spots, I try to come up with something different for one of the doors.

This hanging door basket is the perfect alternative to a wreath. I’ve had my basket for years, it came in a set from Antique Farm House and I’ve used them so many times in my decorating! My exact set isn’t available right now but they bring them back sometimes. This one from Amazon is similar and has a quick delivery.

Step 1. Hang the Basket

door basket

First, hang your basket on your door. I find it so much easier to create a flower display in a basket when it’s hanging up rather than working with it on a flat surface and then hanging it up.

On my door, I have a Command wire hook that is super strong, it holds up to 5 lbs…it also has made it through both hot summers and freezing winters without falling off!

Everything else I am going to use for this door basket is from Michael’s and is current merchandise and you should be able to find it all in-store and online right now.

Step 2. Add Poppies

red artificial poppies

Aren’t these red poppies gorgeous! The color is so bright and vibrant and the petals are perfectly ruffled! For this basket, I used 2 bunches.

Now the secret to making your door baskets look great is to take the time to fiddle with the flowers. Take the time to bend the stems and fluff the petals. These poppy bunches had lots of wired greenery that I bent over the edges of the basket.

Step 3. Add Queen Ann’s Lace

One thing that I love to do when creating flower arrangements is to use different textures. For this door basket, I added 2 bunches of lacy white Queen Ann’s Lace.

Step 4. Add Greenery

artificial fern stems

Now I added a few fern stems to the back of the wall basket. It fills in the empty space at the back of the basket and also added a little height…bonus is that it hides the Command hook.

Step 5. Ribbon

Now to finish up this project, I’m going to tie a length of patriotic ribbon around the outside of the wall basket. I loved this faux linen one from Michael’s!

Just a simple knot with this patriotic ribbon…

Now over the thicker star ribbon, I tied a thinner grosgrain cream and white ribbon and tied a simple bow. This ribbon was part of a red, white, & blue scrap trim bundle they have at Michael’s right now…I have another project in the works using this so stay tuned!

So in under 5 minutes, you can create a bright and beautiful door basket too! I love the look of red, white, & blue! It reminds me of all the great times we have as a family during the summer months!!

I purchased all I need for my basket. I had to buy different flowers and no ferns..they were out of most everything the day I went. So I went to put it all together and realized my basket is quite long and even after using filler paper and foam, the darn thing is still too long. Haven’t been back to get more filler foam but heading there again tomorrow. I think this is just sooo pretty! I ended up with geraniums and some other fillers but they will look nice as my basket is gray. I’ve had the basket a while and wasn’t sure what I was doing with it but this was perfect! I hope mine looks half as good as yours so wish me luck!

Squished-up plastic bags work well for filler too! Oh, you have to send me a picture when you are done! jennifer@cottageonbunkerhill.com
