Painting an old shutter with red, white, and blue paint to make a flag-inspired decoration for your home
Flag Inspired Patriotic Shutter
Who’s ready for Summer???…hands up!!!
Oh, I love it all…the weather, hosting cookouts, just chilling with a good book on a hot afternoon in my favorite cozy, shady spot!!
I love to put up a little red, white, and blue for the Summer too. Here’s the cute patriotic shutter DIY I made recently.

Finding The Shutter
I found a small black shutter at my local antique shop for $10. Perfect size for this project!
1. Paint The Shutter White
My first step was to paint the shutter white using chalk paint. You could totally use acrylic paint too…I just like working with chalk paint.
2. Adding The Blue
After the white paint was completely dry, it was time to add the blue paint.
I used a ruler to make sure I kept the edge straight (I always paint crooked!!)
Once the blue paint was dry I lightly brushed a little white paint over it to give it a rustic look.
3. Now Add The Stripes
I used a yardstick and made light pencil lines on either side of the stick all the way down the length of the shutter. This way all the lines were consistently the same width.( remember…I can’t draw a straight line for the life of me…I think it’s a left-handed thing!!)
Any red shade would look great, I had a barn red shade on hand,
Totally up to you, but I wanted a more rustic feel and dry brushed white paint over the entire shutter when the red paint was dry.
4. And Then The Stars…
Yes, I could have painted small white stars on the blue but I added a coastal twist! Amazon had these cute resin starfish that I thought would be perfect for the stars on this patriotic shutter.
There was space on my shutter for 12 of them.
When I was creating this project I wanted it to be versatile so I would be able to hang it horizontally like a sign or be able to stand it on my porch. I added a couple of D-ring hooks on the top back corners.
I did add a little nautical rope to outline the blue paint; total afterthought!! Just secured it with hot glue.
5. Find A Spot To Display Your Flag Shutter…
This year I’m going to use it standing up on my front porch. I popped a vintage lantern and a pot of salvia in an old pail into my display in the corner of my porch.
You can take a look at my Summer Coastal Front Porch for some more inspo!
I love this. I have a couple of shutters and I’m definitely going to try this. Thank you for sharing.
It’s a cute project!
Friend, this is the cutest and so perfect for Memorial Day and the 4th of July. I’m going to share it as a feature in my Week in Rewind recap on Saturday.
Thanks, sweet friend!!!
Oh my goodness this is adorable, Jennifer! I spotted an old shutter on the road yesterday. I am going to go see if it’s still there. I love how you used starfish too. So cute! I pinned it to my patriotic board to share. Love this idea 🙂

Thanks, Jen!! Yes, I would go back and grab it for sure!! I had to get a little bit of coastal in the mix!!
Jennifer,
This is such a cute idea. I love the star fish addition. It’s perfect for our roundup.
That is simply adorable!! I should do this if I can get out in the heat…did I mention I hate the heat? LOL I just ordered more paint so maybe I can get out there and find a shutter in all my junk! I really think this is too cute! Now seriously I think the starfish are very cute but I think I will opt for stars instead. I love the way you made it look rustic! Ok so I love it!
What a wonderful project! I never think to remake a shutter when I see them in thrift stores. Thanks for sharing the inspiration. #HomeMattersParty
