Here’s one of the easy Christmas ornaments I made this year for my tree using unfinished wood snowflake ornaments
Snowflake Ornament DIY
I grabbed a bag of large unfinished wood snowflake ornaments from Hobby Lobby…but really this will work on any large unfinished wood shape.
Now here’s my secret for “staining” small wood projects without going through the trouble of staining… add a few tablespoons of dark brown Rit fabric dye to a container of hot water and give the ornaments a bath!! Seriously, I’ve used this technique for a few wood projects this year and it is awesome! ( I dyed the wood beads for this wreath)

It only takes a few minutes in the Rit dye bath to make the ornament look stained. I removed the snowflakes and gave them a quick rinse and then set them down to dry.
Once they felt dry I lightly brushed white chalk paint over the surface…just lightly so you don’t cover all the surface with paint.
This will create a distressed look to the snowflake ornament without having to sand the paint off to achieve the distressed effect…remember we are going for easy…super simple, no stress!!
This picture will give you a better idea of how I added the white chalk paint.
Just a quick light coat with little pressure as you are brushing the paint over the surface.
Now to hang them! I decided to use a red & white baker’s twine…my kitchen Christmas tree is all red & white this year.
Finished Distressed Snowflake Ornament
Here’s the snowflake hanging on my tree. You can see part of the salt dough gingerbread ornaments that I made last week in the background.
Wishing you a wonderful holiday season…with lots of love and laughs!! —
