How To Create A Winter Woodland Themed Christmas

In: Christmas Decorating Ideas & Projects, DECORATING, Home Tours

This year I turned my living room into a cozy winter woodland for Christmas. I used lots of wood and natural elements with a little sparkle thrown in!

Bloggers’ Best 2021

Holiday Home Tours

This week is the Bloggers’ Best 2021 Holiday Home Tours… every day this week a group of bloggers will be sharing their homes all decked out for the holidays. The seasonal Bloggers’ Best tours are hosted by sweet Kelly from The Tattered Pew.

If you are visiting from Jordan from A Blue Nest doesn’t she have the coolest style? I love how she incorporates vintage pieces to create a curated look for her home.

For newcomers to Cottage On Bunker Hill… Hello, I’m Jennifer! I live in the seacoast region of New Hampshire with my husband and boys. NH is such a beautiful state and I have the ocean, mountains, and lakes all within a short drive.

This post may include affiliate links; you can read my disclosure policy here.

Creating a Winter Woodland Themed Christmas

If you live in New England then you know what an unusually warm Fall we had…I mean I just changed over my closet a few weeks ago!! For my warm-weather friends the “changing over of the closet” ritual happens in late Spring and then again in the Fall. One day you wake up in a chilly house and know you have to pack away all your cute sandals for another year and drag out the bin of sweaters and boots…there has to be at least one thing in your bin from L.L Bean…it’s a requirement for living in New England!! Now that it’s getting cold out I was ready to make my living room cozier for the winter.

Easy Living Room Updates for Winter

When I’m doing a room makeover or even a quick update there is usually one thing that sparks the idea for everything else in the space.

For my cozy winter living room, it was the area rug that I bought myself for my birthday last month!! (You can find the same rug on a few different sites but Home Depot is about $100 less for the 9×12 right now!!). I was ready to add some richer, warmer colors into my space…and I’m crushing on coppery colors this season!!

I love my other softer blue rug and moved it into my bedroom (well technically dragged it).

The next thing I did was to find throw pillow covers that complimented the teal and coppery colors of my rug. One way to do a quick update in your living room without spending a fortune is to simply buy throw pillow covers instead of buying entirely new pillows!

I found all the covers on Amazon too!

  • Rust Pillow Covers
  • Faux Leather Pillow Covers
  • Faux Fur Pillow Covers

On my end table, I used my Pottery Barn Dupe Vase and filled it with fresh magnolia leaves and white hypericum berries from Trader Joe’s. Trader Joe’s is my go-to spot for all the things…they always have the most affordable selection of fresh greens, dried pods, & flowers.

shop my cozy look

Behind my sectional, I have a super narrow console table. For a winter woodland touch, I added a set of chunky candlesticks (I’ve had them for at least a decade!) added a wood slice and topped it with a pretty pinecone.

To get my snowy pinecone look all you need to do is lightly brush white paint along the edges of a big pine cone then sprinkle iridescent glitter over the cone while the paint is still wet.

One snowy stem in a tall vase and a houseplant in a copper planter completed my console table.

I also changed out my summery gallery wall prints (you can see how that easy makeover here) and popped in a few winter prints (also from the Poster Store)

snowy branches in a vase

On the other side of my living room, I have a wall of my Better Homes & Gardens cube organizers…I just love these things for easy storage!! They are the perfect thing for small space storage solutions…these are packed with toys!

On the wall above the cube organizers, I switched out my artwork and added an old window frame. I draped it with a garland and hung up the jingle bell wreath I made a few weeks ago.

A few other seasonal touches like a silver tray filled with faux mercury glass ornaments and greenery and real wood trees that I’ve had for years (they were from craftoutlet.com)

You definitely don’t need to run out and get new things for decorating every year…reuse the things you love!! I always love opening my storage bins and seeing my favorite things every year!!

Like that snowy pinecone tree, I think I bought it 10 years ago at Marshall’s and bring it every Christmas…the cones have been hot glued back more times than I can remember!!

Entryway Area

We have a smallish home so no grand entryways to be found here!! My front door is set between my kitchen and living room.

I do have a pretty entryway table that I love. You can see it from the kitchen and living room so I always like to have it decorated with seasonal decor.

Neutal Chrismtas decor

I have the Christmas Village that I DIY’d for this Christmas.

On the bottom shelf, I added a couple of lanterns that I had just used on my Fall front porch (the one thing the squirrels and chipmunks didn’t eat out there!!) and a vintage picnic basket that I filled with seasonal touches

Winter Woodland Christmas Tree

This year I went all-in on the winter woodland theme for my Christmas tree! I saw the felted pom-pom garland on the Walmart site back in October (it’s sold out…like everything else this Christmas!!!).

Although I just checked and my pretty faux fur tree skirt is still in stock on Amazon with 2-day delivery and is only $25.(This was a dupe of an expensive Pottery Barn one that I loved!)

I also filled the tree with cute owls. Even my tree topper is an owl.

One super simple DIY I did. over on my TV console cabinet..I’m not even sure you can call it a DIY…is to add metallic silver and gold cord around a plain grapevine tree (Hobby Lobby). It just added the perfect amount of sparkle to the otherwise simple tree.

I made quite a few ornaments for my winter woodland-themed Christmas tree. I will be bringing you all the DIY tutorials later this week.

Coffee Table

On top of my coffee table, I filled up a big wooden tray with all kinds of winter goodies! Mini trees, pine cones, candles, and I added a pretty framed picture of my grandparents. The holidays always make me miss my grandparents.

Thank you for stopping by and coming on a tour of my cozy winter woodland Christmas!! Next up on our Bloggers’ Best Holiday Home Tours is my friend Alyia of Open Doors Open Hearts. Go give her some Christmas love!!

here are a few fun facts…

  1. I’ve lived in New England my entire life! This is good because the beach is my favorite place to be…even in the winter, I love to go breathe in the salt air.
  2. I am an EARLY BIRD!!! I rarely sleep past 4…it’s my favorite time of day and those wee hours are my most productive. (plus, I LOVE coffee!!)
  3. The Gilmore Girls is my favorite all-time TV show…I’ve seen every episode at least 20 times!! “You jump, I jump, Jack” is my #1 favorite. (I.Y.K.Y.K.)

When I came through the front door, I’d be running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to decide which way to go to see all the fun decor! I loved each room and all the thought you put into each one. The colors are gorgeous which are totally different and just fantastic for Christmas and how unique to add decor inside the cubbie shelves. Wish my brain thought like yours. So fun. Glad to have hopped with you this week. Merry Christmas and enjoy those beautiful spaces. pinned
