The holiday season is a time for joy, love, and giving. But it can also be a time of excess and waste. With a little planning and creativity, you can celebrate the holidays in an eco-friendly way. By making simple changes to your traditions, you can reduce your environmental impact and enjoy a more sustainable Christmas.
Sustainable Christmas Decor: A Greener Holiday Season
One of the most sustainable ways to decorate for the holidays is to repurpose and reuse items you already own. By minimizing the need to buy new things, you can reduce your environmental impact and save money.
Why buy new when you can repurpose what you already have? Most of my home decor is a mix of thrifted finds, vintage treasures, and well-loved heirlooms. I think that these unique pieces add character and charm to my home.
By simply rearranging these pieces and adding a few festive touches, I can create a beautiful and sustainable holiday atmosphere. So, let’s ditch the consumerism and embrace the joy of repurposing this holiday season.
Choosing Sustainable Materials
Opt for decorations made from natural materials like wood, pinecones, and dried citrus.
- Dried Orange Slices: Dehydrate orange slices and string them together to create garlands or ornaments.
- Pinecones: Paint pinecones with gold or silver paint for a festive touch. White on the tips for a snowy look.
- Cinnamon Sticks: Tie cinnamon sticks together with twine to create rustic ornaments.
- Dried Herbs: Create wreaths or ornaments using dried herbs like rosemary or eucalyptus.
Dried Orange Slices
A delightful way to incorporate natural elements into your Christmas decor is by drying citrus slices, such as oranges or lemons. These fragrant slices can be used in various decorative arrangements, from wreaths to ornaments. The best part? You can store them for future use, making them a sustainable and reusable holiday decoration.
how to make Dried Orange Slices
- Slice oranges between 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick
- Blot w/ paper towel to remove excess juice
- Arrange orange slices on a baker’s cooling rack over a sheet pan or line pan with parchment.
- Place in 200° oven for 3-4 hrs until dried. Flip every 30 minutes
Wood
Wooden decorations offer a timeless and eco-friendly charm for your Christmas decor. Their natural beauty and durability make them a sustainable choice. From elegant wooden ornaments to rustic wreaths and centerpieces, wood adds a touch of warmth and elegance to any holiday setting.
Even a simple bundle of birch logs can create a festive and natural focal point. By choosing wooden decorations, you’re investing in pieces that will last for years to come, reducing the need for constant replacements and minimizing your environmental impact.
Create your own rustic Advent calendar using a wooden board, wooden slice ornaments, and wooden snowflakes. For the numbers on the slices, you can use a wood burner for a more detailed look, or a paint pen for a quicker and simpler approach.
Wood Slice ornament
Here is a fun way to use wood slices to make ornaments to fill your tree. They actually combine other natural materials too: pinecones and star anise.
Pinecones
Pinecones are a versatile and eco-friendly way to add a touch of nature to your holiday decor. A simple yet stunning centerpiece can be created by filling a basket or tray with pinecones. For a festive touch, add a few sprigs of greenery. You can also transform pinecones into unique ornaments by attaching a ribbon and hanging them on your Christmas tree. Get creative and paint them gold, silver, or white.
Create a beautiful and long-lasting hanging pinecone swag to adorn your door or mirror. This simple project is perfect for transitioning your decor from Christmas to winter. By using natural materials like pinecones and greenery, you can enjoy a festive and eco-friendly display that will last well into January.
Give your store-bought wreath a festive makeover by adding a touch of nature. Simply wire on pinecones of various sizes and shapes to create a unique and stylish wreath. To make this project even more budget-friendly I found all the pinecones on a walk in the woods by my house.
Using Herbs To Decorate
For a handmade touch at the holidays put together your own fresh herb swag. This is a fantastic hostess gift to make too! The best part is that you can pick up everything in the produce dept (or your garden in warmer climates).
Thrifting and Repurposing for a Sustainable Christmas
Thrift stores and flea markets are treasure troves for unique and affordable holiday decorations. By shopping secondhand, you’re not only reducing waste but also adding a touch of vintage charm to your home.
Here are some ideas for repurposing old items into festive decorations:
Old Sweater
Transform an old or thrifted sweater into adorable Christmas ornaments using mini bamboo embroidery hoops! A cable-knit or textured sweater adds a cozy and festive touch. Simply cut out small squares of the sweater and frame them in the hoops. Personalize your ornaments by adding embellishments like mini pinecones, dried flowers, or ribbons. This DIY project is a fun and sustainable way to add a unique touch to your Christmas tree.
Upcyle Your Old Art & Frames
Do you have any outdated artwork or prints lying around? Don’t toss them out just yet! This simple upcycling project will breathe new life into your old decor. With a few simple steps, you can transform those forgotten pieces into stylish and unique winter decor.
For this winter gallery wall, I painted over an old canvas art print then freehanded an abstract design that was inspired by something I saw on Pottery Barn.
Thrifted Baskets
I’ve never met a basket I didn’t like (or want to throw in my shopping cart!). They’re not only functional for organizing your belongings but they can also be transformed into stunning holiday decor.
A vintage picnic basket is the perfect vessel for creating a charming winter vignette on your entryway table. For a larger space, a round basket can be used to group together larger Christmas decor items, such as a wooden sleigh, oversized pinecones, or a mini Christmas tree.

Simply clip a few evergreen branches from your yard and arrange them in a thrifted hanging basket. Add natural embellishments like dried flowers, birch twigs, and pinecones to complete the look. For a pop of color, finish it off with a dried orange slice.

DIY Wreath: A Fun & Festive Project
Why spend money on a store-bought wreath when you can create a beautiful and unique one yourself? This DIY wreath is not only budget-friendly but also eco-conscious.
Simply gather materials from your own backyard, such as conifer clippings, berries, dried flowers, and bittersweet branches. Wire the bittersweet branches into a circular base and then attach your gathered materials. It’s a simple and rewarding project that will add a touch of nature to your holiday decor.
Holiday Fireplace Mantle
To align with my “buy nothing new” Christmas philosophy, I decorated my fireplace mantle using existing decor, many of which were thrifted finds. To create a visually striking garland, I repurposed plain faux garlands from previous years and dressed them up with a colorful assortment of dried flowers from my garden, fresh eucalyptus, dried oranges, pinecones, and handmade ornaments.

Post-Holiday Sustainability: A Greener New Year
After the festivities, it’s important to consider the environmental impact of your holiday celebrations. Here are some tips for a more sustainable post-holiday cleanup:
Recycling and Composting:
- Cardboard and Paper: Recycle all cardboard boxes and paper wrapping paper.
- Plastic: Recycle plastic packaging and ornaments.
- Winter Greens & Flowers: Compost your winter greenery and flowers, just make sure to remove any wire (you don’t need that in your garden!)
Donating and Repurposing:
- Decorations: Donate unused or unwanted decorations to charity or thrift stores.
- Clothing and Toys: Donate gently used clothing and toys to those in need.
- Repurposing: Find creative ways to reuse decorations and packaging materials for future projects.
Tree Disposal:
- Chipping: Many communities offer tree-chipping services, which turns trees into mulch.
- Composting: If your community allows, you can compost smaller branches and needles.
