Where To Find A Door Basket
There are many different styles of hanging door baskets to use. My best advice is to check out your local thrift store or secondhand shops before buying something new. The door basket that I am using was a thrift store find, I just had to look beyond the ugly fake flower arrangement that was in!
Here are a few door basket options that I have found online that would work:
1. Create a Base
Start by filling the door basket with larger greenery cuttings. This will create a lush base for your arrangement. Use garden clippers to trim down the pieces (utility scissors may work as well).
2. Layer In Greenery
Begin adding layers of greenery, alternating between different types to create visual interest. I added smaller pieces of Eastern White Pine that have long soft needles on the branches, juniper, and cuttings of an uncommon type of eucaplytus that I had leftover from another project.
As the basket filled up I trimmed the front pieces of greenery to be smaller to create the layered look.
3. Add Birch Twigs
Tuck birch twigs into the arrangement. This will add texture and a natural touch. If you don’t have access to birch, try using other small twigs like crabapple.
4. Incorporate Dried Flowers
Add clusters of dried flowers to your arrangement. You can place them throughout the basket or create a focal point. For my basket, I added a variety of fuzzy celosia stems that I grew and saved from my flower garden. (see more of my cutting garden)
I did not use floral wire. But if needed use it to secure the dried flowers to the greenery.
5. Add Pinecones
For a natural, wintery feel, add some pinecones to your basket. Wrap a piece of floral wire around the base of each pinecone. Then, wrap the ends of the wire around a greenery branch to secure it in place.
Final Touches: Feathers & Dried Orange Slice
For the final touches, I popped in a few pheasant feathers and wired on a dried orange to the front of the basket.
Finished Winter Door Basket
Your winter door basket is now complete! Hang it proudly on your front door to add a festive touch to your home’s exterior. Alternatively, you can hang it inside your home like I am doing to enjoy its beauty all the time.
One of the best things about a door basket is its customizable nature. Use whatever you have available, such as fresh flowers, winterberries, or even faux berries. The possibilities are endless!
