DIY Seagrass Rush Pumpkin

This DIY seagrass rush pumpkin is based on those cute jute pumpkins I’ve seen lately on Pinterest.

How To Make A Pumpkin Using Seagrass Rush

The twisted seagrass rush that I am using is mostly used for basket-making. I used it this Spring to make these garden towers…put them on your to-do list for next year’s garden because they were super cute and held up perfectly all season long!

The rush comes in a big coil from Amazon so I had plenty leftover so when I saw the jute pumpkins on Pinterest… I had an a-ha moment!!

Step 1.

  I started by wrapping the seagrass rush loosely around the length of my hand and cut 4 bundles that length.

Then added them to a bucket of very hot water that had ½ a bottle of orange Rit fabric dye and let it sit overnight.

I wanted to color my rush but this project would look great leaving them the natural color!! I was just feeling extra!!

If you want to leave the rush the natural color you still need to soak it in a bucket of warm water for at least an hour to soften/loosen it up so it is pliable and easy to work with.

In the morning I removed the bunches of the seagrass rush and gave them a quick rinse and patted them dry with an old towel.

Step 2.

Rewrap the bundles of the rush around the length of your hand again. Then gather the bunch together.

Secure them with a small piece of the rush or jute. Cut off the excess.

Step 3.

Once I made the 4 bundles I took a long piece of the seagrass and ran it through the center of the bundles to secure them all together. Tie them tightly!

Step 4.

Fan out the seagrass rush to form the pumpkin.

Step 5.

I bundled together a few small pieces of a branch and pushed them down into the center of the pumpkin.
