Easy DIY Gingerbread Salt Dough Ornaments for a Festive Holiday Touch

Here’s another easy DIY for Christmas! Gingerbread, also called cinnamon, salt dough ornaments are simple to make and are fun to do along with the kids too.

Gingerbread Salt Dough Recipe

• 1 cup flour
• 1/2 cup salt
• 1/4 cup cinnamon (I bought the cheapest one at Walmart)
• 3/4 cups really hot water

Note: This makes a pretty dark dough, if you want lighter “cookies” just lessen the amount of cinnamon you add.

Mix the dry ingredients together, then pour the hot water in and stir well. Knead the dough until it is thoroughly combined and smooth.

I rolled out the dough on a silicone mat until it was about 1/4 inch thick.

Using regular cookie cutters I cut out as many cookies as I could fit on the dough, then rerolled the extra dough to cut out a few more.

With a straw, I poked a hole near the top of each ornament ( not too close to the edge or it wouldn’t be strong enough to hang).

Put the ornaments either on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat

Bake in a 250° oven for about 2 hours (depending on how thick you cut the dough). Turn them after an hour to speed up the drying process.

My sons were so mad because they thought I was baking cookies because the house smelled so good!

Decorating The Gingerbread Salt Dough Ornaments

Once the “cookies” were done I brushed the tops with Mod Podge and sprinkled them with iridescent sparkles to mimic sugar.

Then I ran over the edges with white puffy paint to make it look like icing.

Finished Ornaments

Thin ribbon, baker’s twine, or jute can be used to hang the ornaments. I used a thin jute string.

I hung the gingerbread dough ornaments on my kitchen Christmas tree along with my dried orange slice ornaments.
