Fall Leaf Stems Made From Felt: Step by Step
This is a fairly easy DIY project! If you can cut out shapes and use a glue gun then you can make these trendy felt leaf stems for a fun alternative for filling your Fall vases.
For my set of leaf stems I am using sheets of neutral-colored felt that came in a large set, it is the same set of felt that I made this felt leaf garland. You can use whatever color felt sheets that you like to match your own style. All the craft stores sell felt by the sheet.
Step 1: Prepare The Materials For Leaf Stems
The first thing you will do is to use this leaf template to cut out the leaf shapes from the felt sheets. For the stems I am making I am attaching 5 leaves to each floral wire. If you want a fuller-looking stem then you can always cut out more leaf shapes to attach to each piece of floral wire.
After you have your leaf shapes cut out the next step is to take the 16-inch piece of floral wire and cut it into 4 pieces (4 inches each)
Step 2: Hot Glue Leaf Stems
Now if you have ever worked with felt before you know that hot glue will look white and crusty if it gets on the felt that is showing on a project.
Don’t worry, there is an easy way to avoid over-gluing these felt leaf stems! What I did was take the 4-inch piece of wire that I was going to be attaching to the felt leaf and push it right into the tip of the hot glue gun. If the tip on your glue gun is too small for this I would suggest using a paper plate. Just squeeze a little glue onto the plate and then swirl the piece of wire in it. By doing it this way it adds enough hot glue to bond to the leaf without overdoing it.
Once the glue is on the wire work quickly. Place the wire in the bottom center of the felt leaf shape. Then use your index finger and thumb to press the leaf together. To set a strong bond you will need to hold the folded leaf until the hot glue sets. Be careful when working with hot glue not to burn yourself, I would suggest using silicone finger protectors.
Continue gluing the wire pieces to the felt leaves. It is easier to do them all at once before moving on the making the tall leaf stems. Plan on 5 leaves for each stem, you can attach more if you would like.
Step 3: Attaching Felt Leaves
Now it’s time to create the tall leaf stem. Take one of the full-sized floral wires and one of the felt leaves. Place the first leaf at the very tip of the floral wire, and wrap it in place with brown floral tape. I continued to wrap the stem in place covering the exposed wire.
For the other leaves stagger them down the floral wire. One of the left then on the right working your way down.
As I was taping the leaves in place I bent them a little bit to figure out the placement of the other leaves to see what looked best.
Also, you can trim off a little bit of the ends of the 4-inch wire on the leaves if you think it is too long, it depends on if you want the stem to look fuller or more sparse.
Circle Shaped Felt Leaf Stems
Along with a few stems of the traditional leaf shape, I also made a circular shape leaf stem. I had eucalyptus in mind, but did a very simple interpretation!
To get the circular shape I used the lid of a jar that was around 2.5 inches. A little larger or smaller works too! Also, cut 5 pieces of felt for each stem.
Glue the circles to 4 inch pieces of the floral wire exactly the same way as with the traditional leaf shapes, and attach the circle leaves to a long piece of the floral wire.
Add Fall Flair to Your Home
So once you are done making your felt leaf stems it’s time to add a little Fall flair to your home with them. Felt everything is a very popular trend this Fall decorating season!
The warm neutral felt that I used for my stems works perfectly with my style of Fall decorating. I bring in lots of natural elements like pinecones, dried botanicals, and gourds, along with earthy colors in my decor.
The stems look wonderful in a vase by themselves or you could mix them in with other Fall flowers or stems. Depending on the height of the vase you are using just bend up the ends of the wire if they are too tall. Make the stems varying heights for a more styled look.
The felt leaf stems can be added to a tablescape or centerpiece too! Anywhere that you would pop in a seasonal stem you could use a felt one.
Other Felt Ideas For Fall
I’ve made a few other projects using felt for Fall. Felt DIY crafts look so cozy and fun!
This Felt Leaf Garland was made from a variety of neutral felt colors for a modern look for Fall. Easy to make project…you just have to cut out lots of the same leaf shape that we used for our project today.
Another cute & cozy project that is soooo easy is wool felt pom pom acorns. They make a pretty bowl filler but I will also show you how to make ornaments and a simple acorn and pinecone garland.
