Transforming store-bought bunny statues from cutesy to stylish to fit in with a more modern decorating look. Using joint compound and paints I’ll show you how to make cement looking bunnies to decorate with for Spring.
Steps to Create A Faux Concrete Look
Here’s a fun DIY project for Spring!! Do you have any little resin or ceramic bunny statues around from past Easters? They are probably in that bin, next to the bag of empty plastic Easter eggs you have and always forget about so you buy more at Walmart…
I grabbed these on sale at Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago. Yes, yes, they are cute but just don’t fit in with my current decor style. I will transform these cute little guys into stylish DIY cement bunnies!
I love the look of all the cement and concrete animals I see in the decorating magazines and catalogs but they are pricey! This is a fun and pretty easy way to get the same look at a fraction of the cost.

Coat Statues With Joint Compound
The first step is to coat the outside of the bunnies with joint compound. I used a plastic butter knife and my finger to get into the grooves.
Once the bunny statues were coated with the joint compound I let them dry overnight.
Painting The Bunny Statues
I’m using 4 colors to paint the bunnies to mimic real aged cement bunnies: White, tan, dark brown, and dark gray chalk paints. I really like using the Waverly chalk paints from Walmart for doing craft projects.
I poured a little of each of the four chalk paints onto a paper plate. This makes it easier to dabble a bit of each color onto my paintbrush and dab it on the bunnies.
Tapping the paint onto the bunnies gives that mottled look of old cement statues.
The best part of this simple craft…if your bunny looks too dark you just tap on some more white paint or vice versa! I globbed on too much of the dark gray and then covered it with more white, and it looked perfect.
Let the paint dry for a few hours on the bunnies before using them to decorate.
Finished Faux Cement Bunny Statues
They came out better than I had imagined they would!! I can’t wait to mix them into my Spring decor.
