DIY Vintage-Inspired Ornaments
Want to give your Christmas tree a designer look without the designer price tag?
You’ve probably seen those fancy, brand-name ornaments that can cost upwards of $15 each. They’re beautiful, but let’s be honest, that’s a lot to spend!
Today, I’ll show you how to create stunning, vintage-inspired ornaments using affordable crafting supplies. Let’s get started!
What You Will Need
This easy DIY ornament project requires simple craft supplies. Begin with a box of clear plastic (or glass) ornaments, acrylic craft paint in dark colors, baking soda, and gold Rub ‘n Buff. Darker paint colors will yield the best results for this project.

Step 1. Paint the Ornaments
For the most dramatic look, use dark, deep acrylic paint colors. Chalk-style paint also works well for these ornaments. One coat of paint should be enough, as long as the entire ornament is covered. Be sure to remove the caps before starting to paint.
I painted 12 ornaments in four colors: barn red, forest green, terracotta, and dark brown. This step can be a bit messy, so I used my index finger to hold the ornament steady while painting.
Step 2. Sprinkle With Baking Soda
While the paint is still wet, sprinkle baking soda over the ornament. You don’t need to cover every inch but try to get most of the surface.
Stand the ornaments up on a protected surface to let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 3. Brush Off Baking Soda
Once the paint is dry, it’s time to remove the excess baking soda on the ornaments. Take a paintbrush and gently brush in a downward motion over the ornament.
Step 4. Brush On The Rub n Buff
The final step to making these vintage ornaments is to dab on gold Rub n Buff to create a gilded finish. To apply, I found it easiest to squeeze a small amount of Rub n Buff directly onto my paintbrush and then lightly brush or dab it onto the ornaments( I mixed up the two motions of brushing or dabbing to create different textures).
While you are at it, use the Rub n Buff on the ornament caps, and use a small paintbrush to get into the small area under the hook.
Step 5: Finish and Display
Let the Rub n Buff dry on the ornaments and caps. Replace the ornament caps and you are ready to hang the ornaments on your tree or use them in a seasonal display.
With a little bit of effort and a lot of creativity, you can create beautiful and unique ornaments that will surely impress your friends and family. These Touch of Vintage Ornaments are a perfect way to add a touch of elegance to your Christmas tree this holiday season.
