Designer Rug Showdown:
Best Rug Lookalikes Revealed
I’ve always loved the luxurious rugs found in high-end stores like Pottery Barn, Magnolia, McGee & Co., and Serena & Lily. But let’s face it, those price tags can be a real eye-opener!
My goal when I started Cottage on Bunker Hill 5 years ago was to show my readers how you can curate a beautiful home without sacrificing your budget I’m on a mission to help you achieve that designer look without breaking the bank.
This week I chose some of the most popular rugs from some of the most popular designer stores and then scoured the internet for copycat looks that offer the same style at a fraction of the cost. And boy did I find some amazing ones!!
When searching for these budget-friendly alternatives I stuck to those rugs that had positive reviews from buyers. But even though these are good lookalikes please keep in mind that they aren’t the same quality as a $1,500 wool rug from the designer site.

Rug Size Guide:
Finding the Perfect Fit
Before we get into my rug finds, let’s cover some essential basics on figuring out what you need for your space. One common struggle is determining the perfect rug size. A well-sized rug can dramatically impact a room’s look and feel.
Living Room Rugs
- Small Living Room: A 5×7 or 6×9 rug can work well. Aim to have the front legs of your sofa on the rug.
- Medium Living Room: An 8×10 rug is often ideal. Ensure all furniture legs are on the rug for a cohesive look.
- Large Living Room: A 9×12 or larger rug can anchor the space. Consider leaving a generous border around the rug.
Bedroom Rugs
- Place the rug at the foot of the bed. For a queen bed, a 5×7 rug is often sufficient. For a king-size bed, consider a 6×9 or 8×10 rug.
- If you prefer a larger rug, place it under the bed with a portion extending to each side. This can create a luxurious and cozy atmosphere.
Dining Room Rugs
- Small Dining Room: A rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond each side of the dining table is recommended. This allows chairs to be pulled out without hitting the rug.
- Large Dining Room: A larger rug that can accommodate all chairs, even when pulled out, creates a more formal look.
