Who says you need a big budget to create a stylish space? I recently challenged myself to shop my local thrift store with just $20 and used my finds to give my entryway table a fresh new look. Thrifting has always been one of my favorite ways to decorate—it’s sustainable, budget-friendly, and you never know what unique treasures you’ll uncover. This time, I struck gold with three amazing finds: a cool piece of artwork, a Princess Diana coffee table book (because let’s be honest, who doesn’t love her?), and a tall metal urn that got a glam makeover. Join me as I share how I transformed these secondhand gems into a chic and personalized entryway display—all for under $20

The Thrift Store Haul
Cold, snowy New England mornings are perfect for hitting the thrift stores! I visited 2 local spots with $20 and a mission—find pieces that could add personality and style to my entryway. There’s something so exciting about thrifting; you never know what treasures you’ll uncover. This time, I hit the jackpot with three unique finds that completely transformed my entryway table. Let me walk you through each piece and how I styled them

The Artwork:
First, I came across this framed piece of artwork with a sleek, modern design. The black-and-white color palette was perfect—it seamlessly complemented my existing decor. To my surprise, it was brand new, still wrapped in protective cardboard from World Market. It felt like a thrift store jackpot! I knew right away it would be the ideal focal point for my entryway table. Sometimes, all it takes is one standout piece of art to pull everything together and elevate the entire space.
The Cost: $8
The Princess Diana Book:
Next, I stumbled upon a Princess Diana coffee table book tucked into a bottom shelf. As a longtime admirer of hers, I couldn’t resist. The cover underneath the tattered book jacket was elegant, and the photos inside were stunning. Not only does it add a touch of glamour to my entryway, but it’s also a conversation starter. When decorating I often use books, both old and new, when styling. It’s amazing how a book can double as decor while also reflecting your personal interests.
The Cost: $5
expert thrifting tip
Don’t skip the book section when thrifting—it’s a goldmine for affordable coffee table books! One of my favorite tricks is to peek under the dust jackets. Sometimes, the actual cover is a hidden gem, especially if it has a neutral linen or textured finish. I’m always drawn to books with simple, timeless covers that can easily blend into my decor.
I also have a soft spot for old Martha Stewart books and vintage cookbooks. They’re not only functional but also add a cozy, nostalgic vibe to any space. Whether it’s a linen-covered book or a well-loved cookbook, these finds can elevate your decor while staying budget-friendly.
The Tall Metal Urn:
When I spotted the tall metal urn at the thrift store, I knew it had potential. The bronze finish was fine, but I saw an opportunity to give it a modern update.
The Cost: $7
Urn Makeover
I decided to use gold leaf Rub ‘n Buff, one of my favorite DIY products for quick and easy transformations.
The process was incredibly simple. I started by cleaning the urn with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Then, I brushed a small amount of Rub ‘n Buff onto the urn using a small paintbrush. I covered the entire urn with gold, but if you’re tackling a similar project, you could also focus on highlighting just the raised details and edges of your thrift store find. This approach adds a touch of glamour while keeping the process simple and customizable
To give the urn a more aged, vintage look, I applied one of my favorite products: Waverly Antique Wax. This wax is quite thick, almost like paint (Find it in the craft section of Walmart for under $2!). I brushed it generously over the entire surface of the urn, then used a paper towel to wipe off the excess. This process left a subtle, antiqued finish, highlighting the details of the urn and giving it a beautiful, timeworn patina.
A little bit of these two products and about 20 minutes of my time transformed the bronze finish into a chic, modern gold that’s going to perfectly complement my entryway decor.
Styling the Entryway Table:
Arranging these thrifted finds was such a fun process! I started by leaning the artwork against my large entryway mirror. modern design and black & white color scheme added just the right amount of visual interest without overwhelming the space.
On the opposite side of the table, I placed the Princess Diana coffee table book flat on its side. To add a bit of texture and dimension, I leaned a small rattan tray (a previous thrift store score) against the mirror, resting it gently on top of the book.
Next, I placed the updated metal urn on top of the book. Its new gold finish added a touch of glam, and I filled it with tall branches to bring height and a natural element to the arrangement. To complete the look, I added a green cascading plant for a pop of color. I always try to incorporate a real plant into every space I decorate—it adds life and warmth to the design. The cascading leaves softened the overall look, making the entryway refresh feel cohesive and inviting.
The Final Reveal
Here’s the finished look! For just $20, I was able to create a fresh, personalized entryway that reflects my style and love for unique finds. The artwork adds a modern touch, the Princess Diana book brings a personal connection, and the refinished urn with its gold accents and tall branches ties everything together. The green fern adds life and warmth, completing the space with a natural, inviting vibe.
This project is proof that thrifting and a little creativity can lead to big results. You don’t need a big budget to create a stylish, meaningful space—just an open mind and a willingness to see the potential in secondhand treasures. I hope this inspires you to tackle your own thrifted makeover!
Jennifer’s Tips for Thrifting:
- Look for Pieces with Good Bones
When thrifting, focus on the structure and quality of an item rather than its current finish or color. A sturdy frame, solid wood, or unique shape can be transformed with a little DIY magic. For example, that dated bronze urn? A quick coat of gold Rub ‘n Buff turned it into a modern showstopper. - Keep an Open Mind
Thrifting is all about seeing potential. Try to visualize how an item could work in your space, even if it’s not perfect as-is. That abstract artwork with the perfect colors? It might be leaning against a dusty shelf, but it could be the focal point of your entryway. - Don’t Be Afraid to DIY
Small changes can make a huge difference. A can of spray paint, some Rub ‘n Buff, or even a new handle can completely transform a thrifted find. My urn went from dated to dazzling with just a little effort—don’t shy away from giving pieces a second life! - Shop with a Plan (But Be Flexible)
It helps to have a general idea of what you’re looking for, but don’t be too rigid. Some of the best finds are unexpected! I went in hoping for decor pieces but stumbled upon a Princess Diana book that added a personal touch to my entryway. - Check Every Section
Don’t limit yourself to just the home decor aisle. Books, frames, and even kitchenware can double as decor. I always peek under book jackets for neutral linen covers or vintage cookbooks that add charm to my shelves. - Visit Often
Thrift store inventory changes constantly, so make it a habit to stop by regularly. You never know when that perfect piece will show up! - Think Outside the Box
Repurpose items in creative ways. A trophy urn can hold branches, a vintage tray can lean against a mirror, and a stack of books can add height and personality to your decor. - Stick to a Budget
Set a spending limit (like my $20 challenge) to keep thrifting fun and affordable. It’s amazing what you can find when you’re intentional about your purchases. - Inspect Items Carefully
Check for damage or missing parts, but don’t let minor flaws deter you. Many issues can be fixed with a little TLC. - Have Fun!
Thrifting is as much about the hunt as it is about the finds. Enjoy the process, and don’t stress if you don’t find something perfect right away. The thrill of the hunt is part of the charm!
Thrifting isn’t just about saving money—it’s about discovering one-of-a-kind pieces that tell a story. Each item I found during my $20 thrift store haul has its own unique charm. Together, they’ve transformed my entryway into a space that feels personal, stylish, and full of character.
This project is proof that you don’t need a big budget to create a beautiful, meaningful space. With a little creativity and a willingness to see potential in unexpected places, you can turn secondhand treasures into something truly special.

The urn makeover is terrific – now I’m going to hunt up something to try it on. My favorite thifting place here in the Atlanta area is Fur Kids – they always have something that appeals.
Your fern is lovely – what kind is it?
Sheila
Thank you, Sheila! I’m sure you will find something similar…you probably have bigger & better thrift stores down there!! If you do you have to send me a picture!! I can’t remember what kind of fern it is but it’s done really well for me, I usually have a tough time with ferns here in the winter with the dry air (I found it at Lowe’s).
The fern looks like a Staghorn, aren’t they elegant. FYI, if ferns do not like the warm, dry air of a house, place a pebble filled tray underneath, with enough water to come just below the pot. One doesn’t want a plant standing in water. Misting is helpful too. Great post, so many ideas. Kim
Thanks so much Kim!! I’ve been trying to mist my plants more this winter, it seems especially dry this year!
What a great job you did on the vase and giving it a new look. Love thrifting in stores and finding new looks for your home, with a small budget.
Thanks for all your great ideas.
Thanks so much Sue!! I think 80% of my home is secondhand stuff or DIYs. It’s so fun to go thrifting or hitting the antique stores!
These are great finds! Totally agree with you regarding coffee table books, and what a great find with the Princess Di book, she was amazing! I was in junior high when she wed Prince Charles and remember how inspiring she was. You certainly found some great deals, thanks for sharing!
I still remember watching the wedding on TV when I was little, I think that’s when it all started for me. It was a good find, I always scan the shelves at that thrift store for old Martha books but I was thrilled with this one.
Great finds! The vignette you created in your entry way is amazing! I love the urn!
Thanks!! After a few weeks of leaving the thrift stores empty handed I found some great stuff!! I have a few other thrift store makeovers coming up but it’s too cold to spray paint here.
Jennifer
I love it all. What great finds. Love this post.
LOVE!! Such amazing finds!! It’s amazing what just $20 can buy at thrift stores 🙂
Everything on my mantle is thrifted! Wish I could send a pic. I love your ideas. I also go to estate sales in my area
