Here’s a quick and inexpensive DIY to make a set of natural wood bowl fillers that are perfect for Fall.
Wood Acorn & Pumpkin Bowl Filler
Today I’m sharing a quick little DIY project that I just made for Fall. Plus, it’s inexpensive to make!!
Last month I ran into Hobby Lobby to grab a couple of supplies and saw little bags of unfinished mini wood acorns and pumpkins.
I grabbed a few bags but had no idea what I was going to do with them… a common issue over here!
Sometimes I just see something or a cool craft supply and get it and THEN figure out what I can do with it…is that reverse engineering????
But they were on sale for $1.50 each so it wasn’t a lofty investment!!

You might remember this trick I have for staining unfinished wood craft projects…coming from the girl who doesn’t like to stain.
Using dark brown Rit fabric dye!!! It’s a miracle!!
Just grab a disposable plastic container, something big enough to fit in whatever you are trying to stain. Add hot water and then pour in a couple of tablespoons of the RIt. Stir the water to combine the dye.
Then I dropped the 2 bags of the wood acorns into the solution. The longer you leave them in the dye the darker they will get.
To check the color I just spooned out one of the acorns to see how it was looking. I think this was after about 5 or so minutes. Then I rinsed them in the sink and let them all dry on a paper towel.
Gold Pumpkins
For the mini pumpkins, I wanted to do something that would contrast the brown acorns.
So I grabbed my tube of Antique Gold Rub ‘n Buff and squeezed a little bit onto a paper towel and rubbed it onto the wooden pumpkins.
Honestly, it was a quick job, and only took a couple of minutes to do the entire bag of pumpkins. Rub ‘n Buff is seriously such a great product and so simple to use.
Then I let the pumpkins and acorns dry for a little while before I added them to a bowl.
Picking a Bowl
This Fall I have used lots of natural elements in my living room when I was decorating. To continue that natural vibe I decided to use one of my raw edge teak bowls that were given to me, they were brought back from a friend’s trip to Bali.
Isn’t it so cool looking?? I found a few on Amazon that I’ll link for you…

Adding the Bowl Filler
Before I added the bowl fillers I put down preserved sheet moss on the bottom. The green color will be a nice contrast to the earthy browns and gold.
Then I added both of the shapes to the bowl and arranged them both colors were mixed together.
Now, for the pumpkins, another idea would be to use orange Rit dye on them. That would look really cute too!

I mentioned that I have used the Rit dye trick on a few other projects. One of the most popular ones is the Wood Bead Fall Wreath.
And for the holidays I used the Rit dye to stain ornaments and mini wood soldiers (also from Hobby Lobby).
