One of my family’s favorite Fall recipes is apple crisp. There’s nothing like the smell of it baking…it makes the house smell so good! Here’s an easy recipe that makes the perfect dessert to serve after a roasted chicken or turkey dinner in the Fall.

How to Make An Easy Apple Crisp with Oats
One reason that I love apple crisp is that it’s so much easier and less fussy than making an apple pie! It’s a throw-it-together and bake-it kinda dessert.
INGREDIENTS:
- 8 large Granny Smith apples (cored, peeled, and sliced)
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
TOPPING INGREDIENTS:
- 1 1/2 cup flour
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup butter (cold & diced up)
filling
In a large bowl, add the sliced apples ( I usually slice them between 1/4-1/2 inch thick).
Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and mix it throughout the apples. The lemon juice gives the apples a nice bright flavor. ( If you don’t have lemon…don’t stress, the apple crisp will taste delish without it too)
Next, add the sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the bowl of apples and mix until the apples are thoroughly covered.
Add the apple mixture to a 13 x 9 greased baking dish.
making the topping for apple crisp
Add the flour, sugars, salt, and oats for the apple crisp topping to a large mixing bowl. Mix well.
Add the stick of cold diced butter to the bowl. I use my hands to incorporate the butter into the dry mix but you could also use a pastry cutter.
You want the mixture to look like sand with pea-sized pieces of butter throughout.
Sprinkle the apples with the topping mixture and bake in a preheated 350° oven for 35-40 minutes until the crisp is bubbly and the apples are tender.
Let the crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. We love it with a scoop (or 2) of vanilla ice cream!
