How to make painted speckled eggs to use in your Spring decor. Easy DIY craft using spray chalk paint and a fun technique for the spots.

DIY Painted Speckled Eggs
I found a bag of craft eggs on Amazon for this project. They actually looked so real!!
Painting The Eggs
Now, how do you paint them… I knew a brush would be tedious and I wanted a smooth look. So I went with spray paint with a chalky finish (Rust•Oleum Chalked Spray Paint) in 3 different shades: gray, blue, and cream.
The eggs roll around from the pressure of the spray paint; putting the eggs in a box with sides kept them from going too far.
It took 2 light coats of paint to get all the sides. The paint looks shiny when it’s wet but does dry as a chalky matte look.
How To Speckle The Eggs
Now here’s a fun trick to get speckles on the eggs. Grab an old toothbrush and a plastic knife.
I scraped the toothbrush over the plastic knife pulling the toothbrush towards me which sent the paint spatters away from me onto the eggs. I learned by error the first time and did it the other way and got the paint all over me!!!
You could make as many or as few paint speckles as you would like…there’s no right or wrong!
Making A Pretty Spring Arrangement w/ Painted Speckled Eggs
Once the paint was dry it was time for my favorite part…let’s decorate!! The eggs are going to go on my kitchen hutch for Spring.

What paint did you use for speckes? Dip toothbrush in paint before drawing through knife?
Hi Corky, I used a dark brown chalk paint but an acrylic would work just as well. Yes, dip the toothbrush bristles in the paint before hand.
Cute bowl of eggs. I learned the toothbrush trick 40 plus years ago when finishing 4 bar stools from Naked Furniture. Remember the store. Quality unfinished furniture. My new table, chairs and hutch were the then popular golden oak but had dark specks. Wala, stain and toothbrush to rescue. Perfect match. Just chalk painted bottom of stools.
I wish there were still unfinished furniture stores around!! We used to have one near me in NH that had so much great stuff!
I saw some of these in a craft booth shop just this week and of course thought “I should look up how to make them” and you just saved me the trouble by sharing this post! I didn’t even think about using a toothbrush. They turned out great and keep these from the kids so you can use them next year too. Thanks for visiting the party this week. #HomeMattersParty
I know!! The toothbrush was everything!! Thanks for having a great party!!
What a great idea Jennifer! I’d love to share this on my weekly blog post on Saturday.
Oh, thanks Kim! That would be awesome!
These are super cute Jennifer! Great tip to use spray paint, less messy!!
Yes! I love that chalky spray paint too; definitely going to use it on a bigger project!
