Living Room Update

In: Decorating Tips & Tricks

When January hits, and all the holiday decorations are packed away for another year, I get the urge to declutter and refresh my spaces. I think it’s because since September there has been seasonal decor everywhere and now the house seems like a clean slate.

I started by changing the layout of my furniture and configuration of my small sectional. The worst thing was halfway through moving everything around and with boxes and piles in every corner I came down with the stomach bug!! There is nothing worse than being sick in bed knowing there is a giant mess looming outside your bedroom door!!

Here’s how my room was set up at Christmastime. Hidden behind the sectional is a small play area ( I have a small home daycare).

Storage Solutions

One of my main objectives was to have more hidden storage for toys; I love the kids that I take care of, but when they have gone home for the day I want all the toys out of sight.

I am a huge fan of the Better Homes and Gardens Cube Organizers. They look so nice and have an incredible amount of room for storage in each bin. I used three units and made this storage wall (an 8 cube and  put a 3 cube on each side). This was where I had my TV before.

See, you would never know they are filled with ponies, princesses, and trains! I added  a couple of new houseplants to this area as well. It’s so nice to add more green inside during the wintertime. I made the little ivy topiary planter that is sitting on the top. I have a quick video on Pinterest and in my Instagram highlights on how I made it.

Welcoming Entryway

Our front door is in the small hallway between the living room and kitchen. I changed the small cabinet I had in the entryway during Christmas with a bigger console table. I scored this table for $10 at a yard sale years ago and refinished it. It’s still one of my favorite pieces and I have always loved the color I painted it ( Dollar Bill by American Paint Company). I know it’s so Springy, but by this part of the winter I have to start pretending it’s not freezing and snowy outside!

Cozy Seating

I was able to switch the orientation of the chaise portion of my sectional from the left end to the right end. It really opened up my small living room space visually.

Living Room View

I wanted a big piece of art for my wall and painted the abstract that’s hanging above my sectional. You can see my tutorial for that DIY here.

TV Area

I moved my TV to the far corner of my living room. It’s on an arm so when someone is watching it we can pull it away from the wall and angle it. The cabinet was a Christmas present to myself with the Amazon gift cards I received for Christmas. It has so much room inside for storage; I’m using for puzzles and books for now.

I added a narrow console table behind the sectional for a lamp and a little decor.

I love how my living room refresh turned out! It feels like a completely different space and has a much better energy flow now.
