One Room Challenge – Week 2

In: DECORATING, Decorating Tips & Tricks, DIY Decorating Projects

Bedroom Accent Wall and New Bedding

Last week I posted my idea board for the One Room Challenge for my cozy master bedroom makeover. I love making idea boards! Back in the day I used to cut out pictures from catalogs and magazines and pin them to a corkboard. Virtual boards take up less space for sure! This weekend I worked on two things: a bedroom accent wall and finally updating my bedding (it’s been awhile!).

I had a few ideas for an accent wall and finally settled on a bold peel and stick wallpaper pattern. I had never worked with it before so I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, but guess what…it was pretty easy!!

I used this peel and stick wallpaper from Scott Living that I bought at Lowe’s.

Project 1. WALLPAPER

How To Apply Peel And Stick Wallpaper

My Top Tips:
  • Make sure to wipe down the wall to make sure it is clean and dust free.
  • Buy more wallpaper than you think you will need! (says the girl who ran to Lowe’s at 3 pm because I was short!)
  • Start your first piece at the beginning of your wall and work your way across
  • Relax! The peel and stick is repositionable so if you don’t line it up perfectly all you have to do it lift it up and straighten it out.
  • Make sure to have a plastic wallpaper smoother and a blade to cut the paper.

I have a beam that runs across my bedroom ceiling and I lined up the first piece of wallpaper in the corner of the beam and ceiling. On the other side of the beam is a wall with a small window that I would attack later. I thought I would start with the easy pieces first!!

I peeled off about 8 inches of the wallpaper backing and lined up the top edge of the wallpaper to the top of the wall.

As I was smoothing down the wallpaper with my left hand I was removing the backing underneath with my right one. It was easier than I thought it was going to be!

smoothing out wallpaper

If I had a section that had bubbles that I couldn’t smooth right out I lifted up the wallpaper a little and did it again.

I found it so much easier to cut the piece of wallpaper after it was up on the wall (as opposed to trying to measure and cut each sheet before you put it up.) I just lined up the top and let the wallpaper unroll to the floor.

Once the first piece was up I scored the bottom with a pair of sharp open scissors and then went back over it with a blade. (the wallpaper cuts easily but you want to make sure you have a crisp, clean line.)

To match the wallpaper plan on using a little extra because you will have to cut a few inches off the top to line up the patterns.

I even updated my old light switch with a prettier one…can light switches be pretty???

Make sure you cut the power whenever you are dealing with electricity and if you are in doubt have an electrician do it for you.

Project 2. NEW BEDDING

Is any bedroom makeover complete without updating your bedding?? It took me awhile to pick out new bedding; there’s so much out there to choose from it can be overwhelming!

My vision for my bedroom makeover is to create a warm and cozy place to hide from the cold winter outside!

I thought I was going to go gray ( I found some great gray sets you can read about here). I finally decided on a combination of grays, beiges, and white.

A good night’s sleep starts with a comfy mattress and we love our mattress from Wayfair; it’s 2 years old and feels exactly the same as when we bought it ( I bought them for all our boys too!).

I added a white bed skirt; did you know the newer bed skirts are elastic so you just have to pop it over your mattress…remember trying to lift up your mattress with one hand and yank the bed skirt up at the same time?? Good times!!

Next, I put on the softest organic cotton sheets from Boll and Branch. They are an incredible Fair Trade Organic company that is making a positive impact on the lives of farmer’s and textile workers across the globe.

Hey, it’s New England and it gets so cold in the winter so I topped off my sheets with a cotton blanket and a cozy quilt.

I topped my bed off with a beige duvet cover and duvet insert.

…and this cute pom pom throw blanket!

I was exhausted after today and couldn’t wait to crawl into my comfy bed!

My next projects to complete my One Room Challenge are to update my lighting and make a cozy seating area so don’t forget to check back over the next couple of weeks!!
