Do zinnias come back every year?

Zinnias are annuals, which means they complete their full life cycle in one season and won't come back on their own the following year. But you can save some of the spent flower heads at the end of the season and save the seeds for next year! They won't necessarily come back true to the original variety but you won't have to buy more seeds!

What's the best zinnia variety for cut flowers?

For cutting, you want varieties with long, sturdy stems and full blooms that hold up well in a vase. The Benary's Giant series is a classic choice for exactly this reason. The stems are strong, the blooms are huge, and they last well in water. The Queeny series is another favorite of mine for cutting, especially if you love those dusty, unusual tones. And from my 2025 garden, Aurora was a standout its layered blooms look so beautiful in an arrangement.

Can you grow zinnias in pots or containers?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with a few caveats. Zinnias need full sun and consistent moisture, and containers dry out faster than garden beds, so you'll be watering more frequently. Compact varieties like Thumbelina or the Zahara series are your best bet for containers since they stay under 12 inches. The big Benary's Giants can technically be grown in pots, but they'll be much happier (and bigger) in the ground.

Why are my zinnia leaves turning yellow?

A few things can cause yellowing leaves. Overwatering and poor drainage are the most common culprits, zinnias really don't like soggy roots. Nutrient deficiency (especially nitrogen) can also cause yellowing, particularly later in the season when the soil gets depleted. If the yellowing is on the lower leaves and the rest of the plant looks healthy, it's often just normal aging as the plant redirects energy to blooming. And if you're seeing a white powdery coating alongside the yellow? That's powdery mildew, which is very common on zinnias by late summer: it won't kill the plant, but good airflow and base watering help prevent it.

Can you save zinnia seeds?

Absolutely! Let a few flower heads fully dry on the plant, then cut them off and pull the seeds from the dried petals. They're little arrow-shaped slivers. Store them in a paper envelope in a cool, dry spot over winter. The one thing to know: hybrid varieties may not come back true to the parent plant. I saved some of my expensive Floret zinnia seeds last season and had positive results!

How long do zinnias bloom?

From the time they start flowering until your first hard frost! So in my Zone 6a New Hampshire garden, that's roughly late July through early October. The key to keeping them blooming that entire stretch is cutting. Every stem you harvest tells the plant to produce more flowers. If you stop cutting, the plant puts energy into making seeds and slows down. So keep snipping, keep filling that vase, and your zinnias will keep going right up until frost takes them.
